Custom backpack cost is set by six variables — fabric and lining, hardware and trim, logo method, structure and features, packing, and order quantity — and each one is quoted line by line so you can see what a change adds before you approve it. Batelipack has manufactured in Baigou, Baoding, Hebei since 2003 in a 2,600 m² workshop with 18 production lines, samples in 7–15 days and runs bulk production in 30–45 days (30–60 days for a fully custom OEM build), starting from 100 pcs per style and colour.
Why there is no single price for a custom backpack
A backpack is not a catalogue item with a list price; it is a specification. Change the denier of the shell fabric, add a padded laptop sleeve, or move the logo from print to embroidery, and the cost of the goods changes. That is why a useful answer to “what does it cost?” is a costed breakdown against a specification, not one number. If a factory quotes a unit price before it has your fabric, dimensions, logo method and packing requirements, the number is a guess, and it will move once the production details are agreed.
The six cost drivers in a quotation
- Fabric and lining — shell denier and type (Oxford polyester, nylon, canvas, PU-coated, RPET recycled), lining grade, colour, and whether the fabric needs a finish such as water resistance.
- Hardware and trim — zipper type and brand, buckles, D-rings, adjusters, reflective piping, padded or ventilated straps, metal tags and logo plates.
- Logo and branding — embroidery, silk-screen print, heat transfer, silicone print, woven labels, rubber or metal badges, custom zipper pullers, printed lining and hangtags. Some methods need digitising, screens or a mould, which are one-time costs.
- Structure and features — laptop compartment size and padding, USB port with internal routing, anti-theft panels, insulated compartments, trolley strap, organiser panels and bottle pockets. Every extra panel is extra cutting, stitching and inspection time.
- Packing and delivery format — polybag, hangtag, barcode label, gift box or printed retail carton, plus mixed-carton packing and carton marks to your forwarder’s requirements.
- Order quantity — the one-time setup in every order (sampling, pattern making, cutting setup, print or embroidery setup, line changeover) is spread across the units you buy.
How order quantity affects the number you see
Setup work happens once per order: the pattern is made once, the cutting table is set once, the print or embroidery setup is prepared once, and the line is changed over once. On a small run that work is carried by a few units; on a large run by many, so the cost per unit falls as quantity rises even though the backpack is identical. Below our minimum of 100 pcs per style and colour, setup dominates the quotation and the number stops being useful to either side.
What to send so the quote comes back accurate
- Product type and intended use — commuter, outdoor, school, corporate gift, or a private-mould build
- Quantity, and whether it is a trial order or a repeat
- Size or capacity, and the target device size if there is a laptop compartment
- Shell fabric and lining preference, or a reference sample to match
- Logo method and artwork, with a Pantone or other colour reference
- Packing format and carton marking requirements
- Target delivery date and destination market or port
A drawing, Tech Pack or reference sample shortens sampling; a clear written description is enough to start.
How to compare two quotations fairly
Quotations are only comparable when the specification behind them is the same. Check that both cover the same shell denier and lining grade, the same zipper and hardware, the same logo method, the same packing format and the same delivery term, and ask each supplier to state what is excluded — freight, duties and third-party testing are common exclusions. Sampling cost, tooling cost, minimum order, inspection standard and lead time should each appear as their own line. A lower number built on thinner fabric, cheaper hardware or no pre-shipment inspection is not a saving.
